IVFA Step-By-Step

  • IV: An adult dose of fluorescein is 500 mg IV. The pediatric dose is 7.7 mg/kg up to a maximum of 500 mg. However, a high-quality image can be captured with as little as 250 mg of dye.

    • Injection rate: 1mL per second is recommended

  • Oral: While oral fluorescein results in lower quality images, it is an option if IV access cannot be established. Ask patient to fast 1-2 hours prior to fluorescein administration. Image acquisition should begin 5-10 minutes after ingestion.

    • Adults: 1g of injection solution

      • Ingest 5mL of 20% sodium fluorescein solution

      • Ingest 10mL of 10% sodium fluorescein solution

    • Pediatric: Ingest 7.5mg/kg of body weight

    • Mix fluorescein solution with 100mL of orange juice before administering for both adults and pediatrics
